ETJ-owners e-mail discussion group

The ETJ-owners discussion list is for school owners, those thinking of starting a school, and those teaching privately at home. The list is a Yahoo group and the default setting are for members to receive one digest of messages per day. The settings can be modified by individual members at any time.

The group is for discussing issues related to running a school, teaching privately or education in general. It is also for ETJ announcements. Members of the list should feel no pressure to post messages - it is fine just to read the messages and stay quiet.

Brief job announcements should be posted to the general ETJ list (two or three lines with a link to another site for more information). Non-ETJ event announcements should be posted to ELT Calendar. They will be sent to members of the ETJ discussion group in a special e-mail newsletter. 'Calls for papers' will also be sent out in this way.

Individual messages to the group are not moderated. The list owner is David Paul.

Guidelines

The following are only guidelines. They are not rules.

  1. Keep messages concise and to the point without long extracts from previous postings.

  2. Try not to jump on each other too much, and definitely avoid foul language and personal abuse. In general, language used on this list should be suitable for all audiences.

  3. Focus on the topic, not the way a previous poster expressed him/herself. There are a lot of teachers on this list and we need to tolerate a wide variety of personal styles.

  4. Keep the focus on teaching and running schools as much as possible. Wider discussions on other issues are welcome, but, wherever possible, these discussions should be carried out in a way that feels relevant to the teachers and school owners on this list. Politics and religion are to be avoided.

  5. Minimize discussions on rules, procedures and behaviour, and simply get on with discussions related to owning schools and teaching.

  6. All posts should be signed with the poster's name.

  7. If someone posts in parody, or even in humor, they should say so clearly. Misunderstandings have caused a lot of hurt feelings.

  • Emergencies
In an emergency, the list owner is able to suspend or ban a member, prevent a member from being able to post to the list, moderate messages from an individual member of the list or moderate all messages.

Commercial messages

(the restrictions on commercial messages and self promotion apply to all the ETJ national Yahoo groups - to post commercial messages, please join the ETJ Linkedin group)

Members of the list should not post commercial messages or promote their own products, services or other businesses to the list. This includes mesages that provide links to sites they are connected with that contain products or services for sale.

Messages that recommend materials or sites that the member posting the message has no vested interest in are very welcome.

Authors or others that have developed materials or services may respond briefly to specific questions on their materials/services.
